Chapter Nine

The Domesticated Human

He came back to the campsite to find the kids playing hop the rock while Vince cleared away the empty salad container and laid out the supplies for their dessert.

“I managed to get the burgers cooked.” Vince pointed to a knotted shopping bag in the middle of the table. “And protected them from the ravenous horde. You weren’t kidding about how much those guys can eat.” He untied the handles and pulled out a plate with a couple of slightly squashed burgers on it.

“Thank you!” Nathan sat down on the bench with a thump. Devon tried to climb up beside him, but Nathan was hungry, and he stuck out an elbow to keep the little vacuum cleaner at a safe distance. “Oh, you already put all the stuff on them. I love you.” He took a big bite and blushed a little when Vince beamed at him.

“You finish those, and then we’ll have dessert. Devon, leave him alone. A man needs a little peace when he’s eating.” Vince scooped Devon up with one arm and rubbed a quick circle between Nathan's shoulder blades with his free hand. Nathan grabbed for him before he could get away.

“Hey, thanks for being cool about this. It didn’t exactly go the way I planned.”

“I gathered that.” Vince sent Devon off to play with the others and sat next to Nathan. He leaned back against the tabletop and gazed after the kids. “Jake was pretty upset about me.”

Nathan chewed slowly to give himself time to think. His first impulse was Don’t worry about it. But that was cheap, and he had more respect for Vince than that. If Nathan was going to be a good boyfriend, he needed to come up with something better. “He’s got a lot going on right now. I don’t think it was you, personally. But we walk a fine line, living among you and not getting caught. And I won’t lie—there are some of my people who are going to be pretty unpleasant.” He took a deep breath and put down his burger. The mouthful he’d already swallowed churned uneasily in his stomach as he contemplated telling Vince about Jude.

A terrible thought occurred to him. What would happen when Jude found out that Vince was okay with the idea of weres? The burger on his plate called to the burger in his stomach, urging it to come back to the fold. Nathan put a hand on his stomach in the desperate hope that he could forestall any sudden reversal of direction.

Vince nudged him with his shoulder. “Don’t start second-guessing this. I mean it. Trouble always happens when relationships get more serious.”

Nathan chewed on his lower lip and glanced sidelong at him.

Vince squeezed Nathan’s shoulder and shot him a determined look. “Do you want to be with me?”

“Yes!”

“Good. I want to be with you. That’s all that really matters. The rest of it, we’ll work out somehow.” Vince pecked a kiss on his cheek and wiggled his fingers at the burgers.
